Herb Explorers - Nature's First Aid Kit (Student Class)
This 1.5 hour hands on class introduces students to the foundations of herbalism by exploring how herbalists identify, categorize, and understand the plants growing around them. Rather than simply learning herb names, students will begin discovering why different herbs are chosen for different purposes and how nature often provides support closer than we realize.
We will explore seasonal herbs currently growing in Appalachia and discuss how herbalists organize plants into categories such as nervines, vulneraries, nutritives, aromatics, and antimicrobials. Students will learn how the changing seasons influence what herbs are available and how a simple home medicinal garden can provide valuable resources throughout the year. As part of the class, students will have the opportunity to sample "Nature’s Sour Patch" and prepare a fresh herbal tea using herbs from the garden. This interactive experience helps reinforce plant identification while introducing students to one of the oldest and most common herbal preparations.
Each participant will receive a fresh herb bundle to take home, along with supplies and instructions for proper drying and storage. Students will also receive a seasonal herbal scavenger hunt designed to encourage continued exploration and observation long after class has ended.
This class serves as the first step in the Mountain Trails Junior Herbalist Program and provides a strong foundation for future classes on teas, poultices, salves, glycerites, and practical herbal skills.
